Welcome
Welcome to nanoBalkan
This website offers a virtual tour of nanoBalkan, showcasing its mission, organizational structure, research groups, and providing valuable information about ongoing projects, collaboration opportunities, and the latest news in nanoscience and nanotechnology across universities and research centers in the Balkan region.
The diverse research groups that make up nanoBalkan are dedicated to enhancing research quality through collaboration among various laboratories, fostering synergies, and increasing visibility to attract new national and international projects.
As the successor of NanoAlb and with strong support from the Academy of Sciences of Albania, nanoBalkan is proud to collaborate with leading universities and research institutions throughout the region where its research groups actively contribute to cutting-edge advancements.
We warmly invite you to collaborate with us-or even join nanoBalkan and contribute to the exciting and impactful field of nanotechnology research!
Sincerely,
Academic, Prof. Arben Merkoçi
Director & Coordinator of nanoBalkan
MISSION AND ACTIVITY
NanoAlb was established in November 2019 by the Academy of Sciences of Albania as part of its restructuring efforts aligned with government directives. Officially announced on January 23, 2020, during the 1st NanoAlb Workshop, its formation was presented by the Academy's President, Prof. Skender Gjinushi, in the presence of representatives from Albanian institutions and accredited embassies, including Spain and Japan.
The foundation of NanoAlb followed key activities in nanoscience and nanotechnology, notably the "Nanotechnologies for the 21st Century" workshop on January 29, 2020, in Tokyo, Japan. This workshop aimed to enhance collaboration between Albania, Japan, and Spain in fields like life sciences, information technologies, and energy. NanoAlb's Director, Prof. Arben Merkoçi, introduced Albania's advancements in nanoscience and announced the unit's establishment. Scientific contributions included presentations by Prof. Majlinda Vasjari on carbon-based sensors, Prof. Kledi Xhaxhiu on novel ternary and quaternary compounds, and Prof. Partizan Malkaj on conducting composite polymers.
Additionally, NanoAlb participated in the 1st International Conference and Exhibition on 1 & 2D Materials (1 & 2DM) held on January 29–30, 2019, in Tokyo, showcasing three posters on Albania's nanotechnology research. These events were financially supported by the Academy of Sciences of Albania and "EHW GmbH" in Tirana.
NanoAlb's mission was to support Albanian research groups in conducting cutting-edge nanoscience and nanotechnology research by fostering collaboration and synergies among groups and engaging with national and international institutions and industries.
After organizing two successful conferences in Tirana—Trends in Nanotechnology (2021, 2022)—NanoAlb expanded its global presence by co-organizing the nanoBalkan 2023 and nanoBalkan 2024 conferences, in collaboration with Phantom Foundation and supported by ICN2, the Academy of Sciences of Albania, and the SUSNANO project.
By the end of 2024, NanoAlb comprised 30 research groups, expanding further to 35 with the addition of five international associated groups. Reflecting its growing international scope, NanoAlb was rebranded as NANOBALKAN to symbolize its broader regional significance.
